Keith Haring Symbol Art, 3rd – 5th grade

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Keith Haring moved to New York City in 1978 and tried to use the city as his canvas. He began doing chalk drawings in subway stations and soon became one of the most
popular artists of recent generations. Haring opened the Pop Shop in New York City in 1986 to make his art more accessible to people. The store sold posters, t-shirts, and other items with his artwork and
designs. He was also interested in many social causes and did more than 50 public works and numerous workshops for children.

  1. LIGHTLY in pencil, have the child draw a simplistic outline of a person (in Keith Haring style) doing one (or several) of their interests. There can be a single figure, or multiple figures depicting symbols of their interest (ex: holding paintbrushes, playing sports, reading a book, running, jumping, etc.)
  2. LIGHTLY in pencil, divide the background into areas with lines creating geometric shapes. These can be large or smaller areas.
  3. With markers or craft paint, color in the people figures with BRIGHT colors. Then, again with BRIGHTLY COLORED markers or craft paint, color the sectioned shapes created in the background. Let dry completely.
  4. With a Black magic marker, thickly outline the Keith Haring inspired figures. Add small repetitive curved lines around the outside of the figures to depict movement, sound and/or light.

* DON’T FORGET TO PUT STUDENT NAME AND YEAR ON THE DRAWING, at least one inch away from the outside border.
